Regularly speak about online abuse in editorial meetings. One way for editors to raise the issue is simply to informally ask whether any journalists have recently been targeted.
The objective is to normalize discussions about online harassment in the newsroom, an important step toward a creating a culture of safety. Journalists should feel comfortable coming forward with their experiences and concerns.
How often should such conversations take place? Given both the informal nature of this measure and the scope of its goal – changing the newsroom culture – it should be implemented as often as possible until it becomes a habit. During a political crisis or civil unrest or ahead of elections, these discussions should be more frequent.
