A good strategy is to open only some of your content to comments. In doing so, select a variety of subjects to ensure that your community has the possibility to express views on a range of different topics. Some news organizations encourage users to comment on their editorials and opinion articles.

While some journalists may be more prone to receiving attacks, don’t allow this fact to be your only criterion when selecting content to be opened for comments. Journalists who are the target of attacks should not be discriminated as a consequence of those attacks. Decisions opening content to comments must be taken together with the journalist(s) responsible for the content and in close consultation with moderators, who have a detailed understanding of the topics more likely to generate vitriolic comments.
